Documentation

Practical guides for modern service businesses: services, client collaboration, delivery, and billing in Harbory.

Updates & Discussions

The updates and discussions system is how your team communicates about work — both internally and with clients. Every request has its own activity feed where updates and comments live.

Updates

Updates are the primary way to share progress on a request. They appear as entries in the activity timeline on the right side of any request detail page.

Posting an Update

  1. Open any request detail page
  2. Click Post Update in the activity panel
  3. Enter a title and content using the rich text editor
  4. Choose the visibility:
    • Public — Visible to both your team and the client
    • Internal — Only visible to your team members
  5. Optionally select team members to notify
  6. Click Post to publish

Update Content

Updates support rich text formatting through the built-in editor:

  • Bold, italic, and underline text
  • Bullet and numbered lists
  • Links
  • Code blocks

Visibility Controls

Every update has a visibility setting that controls who can see it:

  • Public updates are shown to clients in their portal view and to your entire team
  • Internal updates are only visible to team members — clients will never see them

This makes it easy to keep internal discussions separate from client-facing communications.

Discussions

Discussions are threaded comments attached to individual updates. They allow for focused conversation about specific progress items.

Adding a Comment

  1. On any update, you'll see a discussion thread below it
  2. Type your comment in the input field
  3. Choose visibility (client-facing or internal)
  4. Click Post to add your comment

Discussion Features

  • Threaded — Comments are organized under the update they relate to
  • Visibility-aware — Each comment can be public or internal, independent of the update's visibility
  • Real-time — New comments appear immediately for all viewers

Notifications

When activity happens on requests, team members receive notifications:

  • New comments on updates you posted or are assigned to
  • New updates on requests you're assigned to
  • Subscription signups when clients purchase services
  • New requests when clients submit work through the portal

Notification preferences can be configured in Settings.
